December 17 PARTY REPORT

Amidst the busy build up to Christmas and a sudden plunge into wintry weather the turn out last saturday was bound to be a little less than usual, but we managed to celebrate in style with a very comfortable and cosy crowd of 57 fabulous international people! Being out-numbered by 30 men was a rare treat for the 27 ladies;), and it was a pleasure to see so many old friends and regulars as well as 22 newcomers.

The occasion had inspired me to try out some new dishes - on the buffet table the potatoes dauphinoise and Thai fish patties proved to be a hit and were polished off in no time! As a main course option I offered "festive meatloaf" which, delicious as it was, could not match the popularity of the classic chicken curry. And for dessert, along with the specialties of citrus pie and panna cotta, my tarte tatin wasn't too bad for a first attempt!
The only downside to the evening was a rather rude interruption by the mossos d'Escuadra, courtesy of an unsporting neighbour! To avoid any further complaints I had to enforce the official finishing time of 1:30, but I think everyone had plenty of oportunity before that to eat, drink and be merry, and they happily went off together to pursue the Barcelona nightlife!
I would like to say a big thank you to all my guests for their good humour and moral support, especially old friends Frances, Peter and Francisco, and Tina for all her help:) It has been a very rewarding three years of refining my party concept into a successful monthly event and meeting so many wonderful people:) I feel now it's time to shake up the tried and tested formula, so there may be some changes in the next few months... stay tuned! photos Photos by Frances Farrell!

November 19 PARTY REPORT

My expectations sank during the unpromisingly soggy afternoon but miraculously the rain stopped just in time for what proved to be a perfect cosmosoirée! The turn out was spot on with a total of 65 fabulous international people, 35 women and 30 men including 31 new-comers. Everyone was in great party spirits and the entire evening was fun-filled and smooth sailing! Best of all our special guest photographer, Thomas Wagner, did an excellent job in capturing the images and mood of the soirée, so with out further ado I will let his pictures speak a thousand words... A la prochaine!

Saturday Sept 17 Party Report

Once again we achieved an optimum crowd for what was another super summer soirée, and HOT is definitely the adjective that springs to mind! The situation was even stickier due to a drooping fan and the fact that my faithful old freezer finally threw in the towel (hence less ice than usual, sorry), but thankfully spirits and energy levels did not seem to be adversely effected!
The gender balance was again a little askew with 41 women to 29 men, but we had a great turn out of new guests welcoming 37 to their first Cosmosoirée. As ever there was a great variety of nationalities although the local presence does seems to be growing!

I tried a couple of new dishes such as a chickpea salad and caramel panna cotta, both of which apparently went down well, along with all the other staples. And I must say a big mercí beaucoup to my lovely helpers, Mademoiselles Charlotte and Tina:)

Well the temperatures have certainly taken a dive since then, and as we bid farewell to the summer we can look forward to a COOL Cosmo in October!

July 9 voilà l'eté Party Report

Last saturday's summer soirée was yet another very successful and fun event with a fabulous international crowd of 70. Statistically speaking there was large majority of 45 women, but this was hardly noticeable as the 25 men made up for the lack of numbers by their dazzling individual presence, good looks and charm!;) As usual we had a solid core of cosmo-regulars and also welcomed 28 newcomers.
I tried to vary the menu a little with some more summery salads on the buffet table including my new favorite - tuna, apple and walnut salad with cream cheese dressing. For dessert I introduced a cheese cake option and a giant fruit salad together with the already popular chocolate mousse cake and citrus slice, all home-made naturellment! Another summer surprise was the big bowl of refreshing sangría de cava at the welcome bathtub bar.

Thanks to my friend Charlotte for all her help again and to all my guests for their wonderful friendly party spirits:)

April 30 PARTY REPORT

What promised to be another mega-soirée last saturday turned out to be a very pleasant and civilised affair with a "mere" crowd of 68;) This was due to a record number of 12 no-shows (and only a couple of surprise shows) so it was a pity that quite a few people had missed out because I told them it was way too full.

Continuing on with the vital statistics... as usual we had a feminine majority with 40 women to 28 men, and a total of 31 were first time cosmo-guests. As well as the interesting variety of international people there does seem to be an increasing takeover by the local population, this time over half the guests being españoles/catalanes!

Everyone was in fine spirits and the evening flowed very smoothly and with surprisingly little mess, thanks largely to the efforts of my official helper Monica, who also contributed a delicious tabbouleh salad to the buffet table. I believe a fun time was had by all, and in keeping with the well-behaved tone of the evening the official ending time of 1:30 was remarkably respected!
By 1:45 all had politely departed, continuing into the Barcelona night with new found friends :)

Cosmosoirée CARNAVAL Party Report

On a complicated long weekend with a Barça clash and many other parties to compete with, I guess it was bound to be a smaller crowd than usual, so in fact we did quite well to gather 49 high spirited, fancily- dressed international partiers! A handful of heroic hombres staunchly upheld the honour of the male population, most of whom evidently choose to wimp-out when it comes to costume parties;) The 17 guys who did make the effort were justly rewarded with the doting presence and attention of 32 lovely ladies.

It's good to see that the cosmo-fame is still spreading as we welcomed a relatively large number of 22 new-comers into our midst, 13 women and 9 men.

With my new improved loft layout providing extra space and better buffet access we freely floated about blazoning wings, wigs, swords and sombreros as we enjoyed the excellent company and a huge tasty feast, certainly nobody went hungry!
As an added bonus we were honoured with the services of photographer extraordinaire Cesar Julian, who conducted a photocall in my front room during the course of the evening with some fabulous and fun results! Thanks Cesar!!!

Special thanks also to my friends Brigitte and Philippe for their help on the night, and to all who attended for their great carnival spirits making it yet another very successful soirée:)

PARTY REPORT VINgt-onze 22 January

Last saturday we somehow managed to squeeze a record 79 people into my humble loft... it was certainly cozy, but surprisingly comfortable! The final gender ratio was thankfully a little more even than it had threatened a couple of days before, with a respectable 34 men to 45 women, all hailing from about 20 different countries of origin. A massive number of 55 were repeat cosmo-guests and we welcomed 24 new recruits.

Considering the huge crowd the evening went very smoothly thanks to everyone's good spirits and in particular to my wonderful friends Tina, Brigitte and Philippe for lending a helping hand. The food was evidently appreciated, almost all was eventually polished off but I don't think anyone went hungry and many complimented me on the tastiness!

All in all another very good fun and successful soirée, a la prochaine!

18 december 2010 2éme anniversaire PARTY REPORT

On this rather festive occasion and with now two years of cosmo-experience I daringly decided to introduce a few novelties to my tried and tested party plan. To kick start the evening we had a big brew of mulled wine steaming away on the terrace cooker, and a new drinks area on the terrace table.
The first course buffet included more warm dishes such as a huge heated pot of my new pasta favorite - with bacon, red cabbage, prunes, rosemary and walnuts. Must have been a hit because it all disappeared! Then came the big breakthrough of the evening… main course MEATLOAF (instead of the usual chicken curry) served with roast veggies and rice. All of this “hot stuff” required a lot of oven logistics, and I couldn't have managed without Tina for all her help with the ins and outs! Everyone seemed very happy and satisfied with this hearty main course treat, but there was still room for dessert, which I served on the kitchen bar for the first time and this seemed to work well. Two warm citrus pies and a panettone were in turn served up, each with ceremonious anniversary candles, and not to forget the accompanying hot apple compote, cream and strawberries, yum yum!

Moving on to the vital statistics… even with my efforts to control the numbers it had promised to be another "overbooking total" but due to a number of naughty no shows the final toll was a manageable 62 people, 34 women and 28 men from about 18 different countries. Coincidentally there was a perfectly even split between newcomers and cosmo-pros, 31 of each.
I think everyone would agree it was another very fun and successful soirée, thanks to all for participating, and special thanks to Brigitte and Tina for their help.

Cosmosoirée Classique Oct 23 PARTY REPORT

It was a perfect October evening complete with full moon, and I had managed to get through the frantic but now familiar party preparation routine with no panic attacks! Right on cue Brigitte arrived to help me with those vital last minute details and all was in place for a brief moment of calm before the sudden tsunami of arrivals hit at 9.35!

I had had a feeling it would be a big one and I wasn’t disappointed… despite the handful of surprising no shows there was an equal handful of surprise shows to compensate, making a whacking total of 67 people. A select bunch of 27 of Barcelona’s most discerning men reveled in the company of 40 gorgeous women, a truly international crowd hailing from 19 countries of origin and welcoming 35 cosmo-classique newcomers.

My tried and tested food formula kicked off with the usual buffet of tasty salads, ham and vegetable slices, baked potatoes with aubergine dip, and just one new addition - sausages with my homemade tomato sauce, a first attempt at my grandma’s old family recipe! The chicken curry was as popular as ever, and I was pleased with a relatively polished dessert presentation of fruit panna cotta, chocolate gateau and fruit bowl.

The party action was evenly spread between the terrace and interior and as always there was easy mingling and a fun friendly vibe which slowly wound down around 2:30 am.
I am off to Australia this week, hope to bring back some interesting goodies and great new recipes, see you all in November!

Hungarian Deli-Delights @ Paprika Gourmet... EVENT REPORT

As the first of a new type of gastronomic cosmo-celebration last thursday was a very successful evening! The delicatessen was transformed into a perfect setting for our intimite gourmet get together, its tantalizing product displays forming an exotic backdrop as we savored the delicious tapas and excellent wines.
The cosy crowd of 29 discerning guests hailed from 11 different countries of origin; France, Germany, Spain, Italy, USA, Serbia, Argentina, Finland, Turkey, Brazil and Australia. And not to forget our Hungarian hosts who provided a marvelously professional, generous and friendly service all evening.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was the social aspect of the evening, given the relatively small crowd and "cultural" theme everyone was in great spirits creating a wonderfully animated party vibe which lasted until we wound up close to midnight... thanks everyone!

SEPTEMBER 4 PARTY REPORT

With a relatively slow response to invitations in august it looked like being a fairly quiet affair… but the last minute post-vacation flourish of RSVPs filled the event to a near capacity crowd of 63. There were around 21 countries of origin present, the less usual ones including Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Peru. The feminine contingent slightly out-numbered the men with 34 to 29, and it was great to see so many new faces with a massive 34 first-timers!
The buffet spread included most of the cosmo-staples with just a couple of variations, plus a delicious salad from my friend Anna who also helped me out a lot on the night, thanks Anna!:) The main course chicken curry seemed to go down as well as ever, though my “basmati risotto” experiment was perhaps not the biggest success, in future I’ll stick to preparing it the normal way;) The meal was of course topped off by my signature desserts of fruit panna cotta and chocolate gateau, yum! The party atmosphere was as vibrant as ever until we wound up around 2am, with many people going on to continue the night in bars and clubs with new-found friends. Thanks to you all for participating in the good spirit of cosmosoirée, hope to see you again next time!

CITY STARLIGHT SOIRÉE, JULY 24 2010

Our special summer celebration last saturday was a hugely successful soirée enjoyed by all. A big thank you to my wonderful friend Brigitte for co-hosting this event in her penthouse apartment with its fabulous terrace!

With our estimated crowd capacity of 60 we were fully booked and couldn't squeeze in everyone who wanted to come, sorry! Numbers came in more or less perfect with 59 guests plus the two hostesses, and may we congratulate ourselves on achieving a male majority this time (not an easy task in Bcn), with a ratio of 32 to 29. As usual the crowd was a great mix of diverse nationalities, ages, visitors and residents, including 24 newbies welcomed into the cosmo-ranks.

With a lucky break in the rain which has plagued Barcelona for the past week, we were blessed with a perfect June evening, and most of the party action took place on the terrace under a beautiful clear sky.

Many cosmo-regulars couldn’t make it this time but we managed to pull in a massive 36 first-timers to make up a total crowd of 57, with 34 women and 23 men. There were guests from some 20 countries of origin, including a truly notable Italian contingent and the French team coming in a close second ;-)

I managed to relax and mingle quite a lot (so much so that I forgot to take any photos…) and it was wonderful to meet so many interesting new people, all happy cosmo-converts it would seem!

Details of the July event (not on the 3rd as previously scheduled) will soon be announced... with a surprise new location... See you there!

Saturday May 1st SELECTSOIRÉE deluxe... A MEMORABLE EVENING!

photo Cristian Diez I would like to start by thanking my amazing friends Cristian and Hop for allowing me to hold this event in their beautiful home, and for all their help and support! I believe it was a very special evening for everyone who came, captivated by the elegance and grandeur of this magnificent apartment and its enchanting garden terrace.

Given the spaciousness and glamour of the venue naturally I had to indulge in some extra luxuries such as real glasses and a live jazz band! Musicians Rhys, Gaspar and Jorge did an excellent job in keeping the cool and sophisticated vibe flowing all evening.

I also want to thank two of my very best friends for lending a huge helping hand – Brigitte who charmingly managed the very popular “welcome” cocktail bar (to which guests repeatedly returned all evening ;-) and Jamie for taking charge of the buffet table until I was finally freed from my front door duties!
Having felt that the food was really not the focus of the evening I wanted to keep it a little simpler (not to mention less messy) than usual, so the buffet spread of salads and slices was itself the main course, all very healthy and it seemed to go down well! For dessert I put together a selection of cakes with a variety of fillings and fruit toppings.

When I finally had a chance to mingle with my guests and soak up the “ambience” it was obvious that everyone was having a great time and really enjoying the special setting and the fabulous company of the 92-strong international crowd. The patchy rain was unfortunate but even that didn’t manage to put a damper on an otherwise perfect evening!

As my first attempt at a cosmosoirée in a different venue it was actually much more work and stress than I could have imagined (next time I'm getting hired help!)… but with all the appreciation and encourgement shown to me by my wonderful guests it has proved to be worth the effort in the end. Thanks everyone, glad you enjoyed!

APRIL 10 PARTY REPORT

When I realised to my horror, the day before the event, that the Barça-Real Madrid match fell on the same night, I feared a deluge of cancelations and no shows… However the cosmo-comrades rallied to the cause and we managed to gather an excellent crowd of 62, including 32 fabulously free-thinking and gorgeous men! (Ok admittedly a handful of them arrived after the match;)
There were guests from 20 countries of origin and it was nice to see so many new faces with just over half of the attendees being first-timers, some just passing through Barcelona for a few days.
Almost every morsel of food and drink was eagerly consumed and I allowed the revelry to continue until about 3am in appreciation of the people’s choice of cosmosoirée over football:)
Big thanks to Philippe, Nicky and Brigitte for their help:)

Last Saturday was an incredible evening and the biggest turn-out yet. No time to write an elaborate description this week but lots of photos were taken and they speak for themselves! Here are the vital statistics anyway:

A year had flown by since the very first experimental cosmosoirée on the 20th of December 2008. I could barely have hoped that the events would become so popular and successful, and that this anniversary occasion would culminate in such a perfect model of my concept!
With the freezing temperatures and the pre-christmas timing it might have been complicated to draw in a good crowd… but somehow the numbers came in spot on with a full house of 60, and magically there was an even balance of 30/30 men and women! Of these 21 men and 14 women were new-comers, the rest being cosmo-repeats. There were 17 countries of origin present: a good handful from France, Germany, USA, GB, and Australia/New Zealand, a couple each from Holland, Italy and Austria, and one each from Finland, Poland, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina and Bolivia. Not to mention a massive 21 local representatives from Spain/Catalunya!

In my quest to keep improving the events I invested in some new capital equipment: a freezer for mass production of ice, a giant ice bucket, new sangria bowls, and several super-sized salad bowls. Another novelty was the printed welcome cards to explain the evening’s proceedings, and I think that these developments helped to run things more smoothly with a little less work on the night. Still I always count on a couple of good friends to arrive early and help me out with those final touches, a big thanks to Brigitte and Anna!
For the buffet spread I tried a few new dishes – a cous-cous salad, lentil walnut salad, sesame brussel sprouts, as well some of the old staples - bok choy, tuna pasta, baked potatoes with aubergine dip, ham and veggie slice and a spinach tortilla. Thanks also to Brigitte, Anna and Ana for their delicious contributions to the buffet, a salad, quiche and samosas/pakoras respectively.
As somewhat of an experiment I offered a choice of main course this time, the usual chicken curry or chile con carne (sin carne version for vegetarians) and I have to say the chicken curry won hands down! So I will probably save myself the extra work in future and just stick to the old favorite. For dessert I prepared a fruit salad, honey crackles and a bigger-than-ever chocolate gateau complete with anniversary candle, which I delivered on the terrace to a spontaneous chorus of “happy birthday to you”:)
Speaking of the terrace, the unique characteristic of this party was the fact that it did NOT all happen out there! The freezing conditions would have normally been alleviated by the gas heater, but unfortunately the gas ran out quite early in the evening and almost everyone stayed indoors, only venturing out for the occasional cigarette. It was interesting to see a different, more interior and cosier party... and thankfully there was a lot less smokers’ mess to clean up the next day;)
The festive spirit was definitely in the air and we soiréed on until almost 3am. I wish everyone a happy holiday season and look forward to seeing you all in 2010!

Nov 14 a memorable evening!

I had a feeling the november event would be a quiet affair… how wrong I was! It turned out to be the most popular cosmosoirée ever, a record 55 people confirmed on facebook alone (not all of them serious of course) and by thursday night I was already turning people down (sorry). The final guestlist of 67 was eventually cut down to 62 with the (still unacceptable) handful of no shows. There was a noticeable majority of women, with 36 as opposed to a mere 26 men. A good mix of 19 countries of origin were present, the more unusual ones including Bulgaria, Poland, Japan, Mexico and Peru. Just over half the guests were first timers and 29 were cosmo regulars.

I had felt it was finally time to branch out from my usual menu and I rather optimistically prepared a main course of chile con carne with condiments, instead of my diehard chicken curry (which I could make with my eyes closed) This rather complex procedure through me totally off schedule, not helped by my determination to finally add my famous tortilla española (two in fact) to the cosmo-buffet… and I entered panic mode by 6pm! Anyway it all turned out ok, and with the early arrival of Irma and Jamie to help me out with final touches all was ready on time and slowly but surely the party began.

Other highlights on the buffet table included salad and quiche from Brigitte and Marc, Sonja’s delicious lentil salad, Ana’s pakoras, and an amazing roast vegetable platter from Philippe, who was also my right-hand-man in the kitchen all evening. For dessert I prepared a fruit salad as well as my usual chocolate gateau, and we had a special treat with Jamie's world renowned choc-chip cookies.

When I finally escaped from kitchen duties around midnight I joined the happy crowd and saw for myself it was yet another incredibly successful and enjoyable evening for everyone. However I had had to put a damper on proceedings and steer people to the door by 2:30 am… unfortunately I had a work meeting for my elusive day job at 10:30 am Sunday, OUCH!

Expectation was high after the long summer break and with the flourish of early RSVPs I braced myself for a big one. Indeed it looked like an overbooking, but thanks to a number of no-shows (still a no-no) and “facebook flakes” (as I lovingly call them ;) the final number was reduced to a manageable 57 people. There were 15 different countries of origin present, 31 women and 26 men, with 33 cosmo-pros and 24 rookies.
My wonderful friends Irma, Jamie and Brigitte arrived a little early to help with final preparations and all was in place by 9:15 when the surge through my front door began. It was a lovely October evening with the first signs of crisp autumn air... and an overloaded coat stand! To avoid the usual congestion on the terrace (where the only drinks service has always been located), I introduced a second bar area in the bathtub which served its purpose well.
The first course buffet spread of salads, slices, baked potatoes and pakoras obviously went down a treat before I served the hot main course. My chicken curry, basmati rice and cachumber salad were as delicious as ever, and we also had a vegetarian option, a delectable spicy curry made by Bill. For dessert we were treated to Mitsi’s famous brownies, as well as my chocolate gateau and honey crackles.
As usual the party atmosphere was really buzzing and happy with everyone mingling and making new friends. On this occasion I chose to ignore the hopeful hints at a salsa session or ABBA-mania, but guests still lingered till late… eventually I made a few hints of my own and everyone cleared out by about 3am. I felt really happy with another successful cosmosoirée but my bed was beckoning!

8:45pm and I was starting to panic, more than 60 people about to descend upon my doorstep… Thankfully help arrived in the angelic form of Hyon, soon followed by Amanda (guest of honour, my old friend all the way from Sydney), the ever-lovely Jamie and a spectacular Brigitte. Food was laid on the buffet table and last minute details were tended to before the onslaught of the masses.

I was somewhat concerned about the “over-booking” with 60+ confirmed, but in the end there were a few no-shows (which I consider very rude but in this case perhaps a blessing). The final total was 59 guests - 32 women and 27 men. Of these there were 33 first timers and 26 repeats including a hard core of regulars! The relatively limited number of nationalities present, a mere 15, I would have to blame on the local invasion, with 23 Spanish/Catalans it would seem they are trying to claim the cosmosoirée for their own;) There was also a healthy U.S. contingent of 10, and a sprinkling each from Australia, Italy, France, Britain and Germany. Holland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden managed to rustle up a representative or two, and I was particularly “encantada” to receive 3 latino americanos (además todos chicos guapos) from Venezuela, Peru and Argentina… bárbaro!

The highlights of the 1st course buffet were Hyon’s delectable oriental summer rolls with peanut sauce, wonderful salads by Jamie, Brigitte, Paolo and myself, Natalia’s mouthwatering meatballs and Maite’s exquisite quiche. Unfortunately my lovingly- prepared tabuleh salad remained neglected in the fridge behind a mountain of bottles, and I completely forgot to put it out! Oh well, it was very much enjoyed by my workmates on Monday.

With my kitchen overtaken by party animals I did as best I could to serve out my old faithful chicken curry in a civilised manner, and it went down a treat as ever. Then finally the dessert selection - fruit salad, chocolate torta, a special coca from Olot (thanks Jordi) and my childhood special honeycrackles (a little underdone, sorry) – and I think I managed to perfect the surprise spotlight dessert presentation on the terrace table amid gasps of appreciation.

At that point I was able to relax and enjoy the party, and what fun it was! The terrace was even more packed than usual with people enjoying the balmy summer evening. Later some ingenious guests cooled off by wading in the icy bathtub, and some crazy photos were taken (I want to see them!) There was salsa dancing and general mayhem till 3am... luckily my neighbours were away!

For the moment I’m not planning another event over the summer, at least not in my loft. But you never know, I might suddenly be inspired, or have a special event in a different venue. There will indeed be une petite soirée in September… and a welcome back authentic cosmosoirée in October. See you then!

It was a beautiful warm night, summer was in the air at last… and most of Barcelona was out of town for the holiday weekend! Would anyone come to cosmosoirée???

I optimistically prepared my house anyway, and left the terrace awning-less to reveal a clear sky with the illuminated crown of my neighbouring skyscraper hovering overhead like a UFO... It was still dusk when the first trickle of guests started to arrive, naturally gravitating out onto the terrace to the fresh air, and the drinks! Gradually the trickle grew into a respectable sized crowd, smaller than usual with just 38 people, but a very interesting and animated group, and the party soon got going!

I know you’re all hanging out for the vital statistics - there were 20 men and 18 women, exactly evenly matched between first timers and repeat attenders - 19/19. We had the lowest ever count of countries of origin with a mere 12, mostly the predictable ones, but I am happy to report two new nationalities on the cosmosoirée list – China and the Dominican Republic!

I for one especially enjoyed the evening, perhaps because it was smaller and more intimate than usual I was able to relax and socialise more. But even objectively speaking I would say that it was a great mix of people and everybody seemed to have a wonderful time, thanks to all for being such fabulous guests! Also a special mention to DJ Julius for providing the cool vibes, and to Stephane for doing a great job as my official helper :)

Might I also take a moment to congratulate myself;) for preparing basically ALL the food. With most of my friends away I couldn’t rely on the delicious dishes usually brought by a number of them so apart from the scrumptious croquetas made by Natalia and Ana (gracias chicas), I provided every other morsel of food. I managed to fill the buffet table with a nice array of salads, of which the bok choy was the clear favourite, plus jacket potatoes with cashew pesto, guacamole etc... My main course chicken curry was possibly the yummiest ever (in my opinion), and since it is toned down for delicate local palates I was rather astonished that several Spanish guests asked me to spice it up! Be warned for next time;) For dessert, along with a giant fruit salad, I managed to throw together a very impressive and surprisingly delicious layered chocolate cake with berries on top… I think this will be making a regular appearance!

Now that the weather is hotting up the logistics of preparing and keeping all the food and drinks cool has become quite a challenge I must say. In fact my fridge was seriously threatening to go on strike with the work overload, not to mention the difficulty for myself working in such conditions and the possible discomfort of the crowd in summer... So the plan for the moment is that the next party on June 27 will probably be the last such one until after the summer… However there could be a few surprises with special events and a change of venue, so keep watching this space!

PARTY REPORT SATURDAY MARCH 28

Undaunted by the bad weather a determined cosmocrowd turned out last Saturday for another hugely successful soirée. A total of 53 fabulous international people braved the heavy rain and joined together to eat, drink, be merry and make new friends! This time only 3 unfortunate confirmees had been struck down by SFS (sudden flu syndrome) and could not make it. The male/female ratio was evenly matched with 27 women and 26 men (mosty single and gorgeous;). There were 17 “repeat attenders” who had been to at least one of the 3 previous events, and 36 first-timers.

Amongst the guests from 20 different countries of origin there was a notable majority of Scandinavians and Northern Europeans, plus the usual healthy dose of North Americans and an ever- growing Australian contingent. Not to forget the sprinkling of Italian stallions and plenty of guapas and guapos from our host country. It’s also great to see some guests hailing from more exotic places such as Albania, Turkey and India. Our one Colombian guest was strangely the ONLY representative of the American continents south of the US border! Vamos, no puede ser, han de venir mas latinos!!!

I’m not sure if it was the rain or the presence of so many strapping young men (or the combination of both) but the abundant food supply was hungrily devoured and there was very little left-over this time. It was evidently greatly appreciated and complimented on, highlights being Sonja’s two delicious salads, Salvatore’s spinach and ricotta pie and mini-pizzas, my bok choy and pasta salads, samosas and pakoras from Ana, my ever-popular chicken curry, and to top it off Irma’s incredible chocolate cake! I would also like to thank Irma for all her help and support during the evening, and even with the cleaning up the next day:)

The soirée wound up around 1.30 – 2am with everyone enthusing about what a great time they'd had and vowing to come again. Many new found friends formed groups to continue the night in bars and clubs. For me a quick night-cap to wind down and hit the sack, exhausted but happy with such a wonderful evening!

PARTY REPORT FEB 28

Well, what can I say… it was HUGE! Only the third cosmosoirée ever but word seems to be spreading fast. We had 52 official guests (plus a few blow-ins) from 20 different countries of origin, including for the first time Sweden, Norway, Canada, Peru and India. The male/female ratio was however slightly imbalanced with women out-numbering men 32 to 20… so come on guys, that should be an incentive for you to sign up for the next one!

Once again the first course buffet was an impressive spread, highlights including Salavatore’s spinach and ricotta pie and mini-pizzas, Paolo’s artichoke quiche, delicious salads by Anna, Dani and myself, and some superb jamon from Josema. As the main course my chicken curry did not disappoint it's fans, and the dessert selection (served on the terrace this time) starred Salvatore’s panna cotta and Bea’s apple tart…Yum!

However of course the food is not the priority, the main idea is for everyone to meet new people and have a great time, and the cosmosoirée formula certainly seems to work in that respect! There was a wonderful vibe, with an interesting and varied crowd mingling and enjoying the company of new-found friends - as an example the evidence can always be seen on facebook in the following days!

Another personal highlight for me was the unexpected guest appearance of my very dear friend Frances, who hopped on a plane from Madrid just to be at the party and surprise me:)

The only slight downer of the evening was that my neighbours complained once or twice so I will have to control a couple of things in the future… no dropping-in late (and especially ringing the wrong doorbell), in future there will be no admission alter 11pm. Also I’ll probably try to tone down the activity on the terrace around 1:30 and bring the party quietly inside…

In keeping with my schedule the next party will be on Saturday March 28, and it promises to be a sell-out so reserve your place ASAP!

Another very successful cosmosoirée was held last saturday, despite the heavy rain which evidently put some people off coming at the last minute (not a very good excuse!). In total there were 36 guests, 19 women and 17 men, from 15 different countries of origin: Spain, USA, Italy, Holland, Germany, Finland, Latvia, Scotland, France, Slovakia, Turkey, Argentina, Colombia, New Zealand and Australia!

The format was pretty much the same as the previous party and all went very smoothly. Some wonderful home-made delicacies were again provided by friends, thanks guys for your efforts! Most memorable were Salvatore’s potato gratinée and apple pie, Bea’s apricot tart, Hop's chickpea salad, quiches from Anna and Paolo, Eva’s tuna montaditos… and may I also add my own bok choy salad and of course the old faithful chicken curry…

Once again the terrace seemed to be the most popular spot during the evening (perhaps because that's where the self serve bar is;) and the awning managed to protect us all from the rain, not a problem!!! Another place which is proving to be a prime position is the bathtub! Not as odd as that sounds due to the fact that is is opened out to the living space and faces the buffet table, so it forms an excellent spot for guests to perch and becomes a bit of a hub.

The party went on a little late this time, with a small group of stayers dancing on into the wee hours... not exactly my ideal as I don't want to start annoying the neighbours, but what can I say, we were having so much fun! There was rather a mess to clean up in the end... but thanks a lot to Irma and Lorne for helping me.

I had actually been expecting around 50 guests and had told a few others they couldn't come as I was at the limit... so I would like to stress again that bailing out at the last minute (especially not even letting me know) is very bad manners! Apologies (and sympathy) of course to those who had legitimately come down with terrible flus:(
Finally I would like to thank everyone who came and participated in the spirit of cosmosoirée to mingle and make new friends. All in all a very enjoyable evening.

I am happy to report that the first cosmosoirée party was a great success. In total we had 39 guests, 19 women and 20 men, from 14 different countries – Italy, U.S.A., France, Germany, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, Finland, Serbia, Japan, Ireland, England, Australia and of course a good number from España/Catalunya/Pais Vasco. Not a bad start! Especially considering that so many people were already away for the Christmas holidays.

The buffet table was a impressive spread of salads, quiche, tortilla, pinchos, dips, chips, cheese, olives, etc, and I would like to thank the friends who helped out by contributing their delicious dish:)

At the far end of my long salon the terrace was beautifully lit (and heated!), and housed a self-service bar with two large bowls of Salvatore’s sangría and an over-abundant supply of red and white wine and beer. It proved to be a very popular spot for guests to mingle all evening, and not just the smokers!

I served the main course, to the surprise of most it seemed who were already full from the buffet, from the kitchen bar. Made a HUGE amount of my famous chicken curry, (mildly spicey and a little sweet) with pilau rice (my version) and an indian salad accompaniment, it was delicious if I may say so myself and everybody seemed to agree! There was plenty to go around, in fact there was so much left-over that some lucky people got to take home doggy-bags.

Finally the dessert… everyone was pretty much absorbed in conversation by then and it's appearance on the buffet table almost went unnoticed… a giant fruit salad, Anna’s delicious tirimisu, cheesecake, pandoro with mascarpone, chocolates… gradually it disappeared and was evidently greatly appreciated.

Most importantly of course… the general atmosphere, which I think was wonderful, everybody seemed really relaxed and comfortable, mingling and making new friends. There was a really good feeling, positive and fun… my only regret is that I was SO busy I completely forgot to take photos (except this one of the terrace before anyone arrived...) Oh well, next time will be even better!
